Apple has recently announced its decision to shut down the My Photo Stream service on July 26th, 2023, marking the end of a free service that has been available since the launch of iCloud in 2011. My Photo Stream allowed Apple users to conveniently upload the past 30 days’ worth of images and videos, up to a limit of 1,000, from their Apple devices to iCloud. This service predates iCloud Photos and offered users a means to access their visual content across multiple devices. Notably, media uploaded through My Photo Stream did not contribute to the iCloud storage cap, although they were not stored at full resolution.

According to a support document discovered by MacRumors, Apple revealed that My Photo Stream will cease automatically uploading photos to the company’s servers on June 26th, 2023. Following this date, users’ photos and videos will remain on iCloud for an additional 30 days until the official shutdown on July 26th. Since all images and videos uploaded through My Photo Stream are stored in their original format and resolution on at least one Apple device, no cherished memories will be lost during the shutdown process. However, to ensure access to specific images on particular devices, Apple advises users to save them to the respective device’s Photo Library before July 26th.

For iPhone and iPad users, saving an image from My Photo Stream can be done by opening the Photos app, navigating to the My Photo Stream album, selecting the desired photo, and tapping the Share button to save it to the Library. Apple concludes the support document by highlighting that “iCloud Photos is the best way to keep the photos and videos you take up to date across all your devices and safely stored in iCloud.”
