Adobe has introduced a groundbreaking tool called “Generative Fill” as part of the Photoshop beta release. Leveraging cloud-based image synthesis and AI-generated content, Generative Fill enables users to fill selected areas of an image based on a text description. Powered by Adobe Firefly, Generative Fill utilizes a deep learning AI model that has been trained on millions of images from Adobe’s stock library. It associates specific imagery with corresponding text descriptions. Users can now input their desired image content, such as “a clown on a computer monitor,” and Firefly will generate multiple options for selection. The tool employs a popular AI technique called “inpainting” to seamlessly blend the synthesized imagery into the existing image, creating a context-aware and visually cohesive result.
To utilize Generative Fill, users first select the area of the image they wish to modify. A “Contextual Task Bar” appears, allowing them to enter a description of the desired content. Photoshop then sends this data to Adobe’s servers for processing, and the results are delivered back to the application. Users can choose from various generated options or create additional alternatives to browse through. The tool operates by creating a new “Generative Layer,” enabling non-destructive alterations to image content, such as additions, extensions, or removals, all guided by the text prompts.
